Becoming A Volunteer

Opportunities to volunteer may include being a wish granter, office worker, translator, fundraiser, speaker or event staff member. Wish-granting volunteers work in teams of 2-3 to grant the wishes that change lives. Make-A-Wish trains these volunteers to help children identify their most heartfelt wish and to bring the experience to life in a way that exceeds every expectation.

We are currently seeking volunteers who are bilingual and/or reside in the following areas:

  • Northeastern San Diego, including Fallbrook, Escondido, and Ramona
  • Southern San Diego, including Chula Vista and San Ysidro
  • Eastern San Diego, including Santee, Alpine and El Cajon
  • Imperial County

If you meet the above criteria and are 18 years of age or older, please:

  • Review types of volunteers and commonly asked questions, then
  • Complete this quick Volunteer Interest Form online for consideration

Our volunteer manager will follow-up with you as quickly as possible.

If you are under the age of 18 and wish to get involved, click here to learn about our Kids for Wish Kids® program.

IMPORTANT!
To provide the best experience possible, we require all potential volunteers to undergo an assessment. Our work involves children and sensitive information, so select volunteer positions require a criminal background check and evaluation every three years. The steps to become a member of our volunteer team includes:

Step 1 - Volunteer Orientation
Attend a one-hour Volunteer Orientation session to become familiar with our program, philosophy, needs, policies, procedures, and expectations. All orientation attendees will be provided with a Volunteer application, Conflict of Interest Ethics Statement (COIE), and Reference Questionnaire to send to 2 non-family references.

Step 2 - Volunteer Application
Complete and return the volunteer application, COIE, and 2 references to the chapter office. Upon completion, we may invite you to a one-on-one interview to help us determine if Make-A-Wish is the right fit for you.

Step 3 - Background Check
If all of the above is met, volunteers must successfully complete a criminal background check, repeated every 3 years. Make-A-Wish does not employ or utilize as a volunteer any individual who has been convicted of a crime that (a) victimizes children, (b) is sexual in nature, or (c) involves violence, fraud, or significant theft.

Step 4 - Welcome
When all the steps have been satisfactorily completed and we find you a right fit for our organization, we will contact you to officially welcome you and to update you on next steps based on the opportunities in which you are interested.

Note: Any volunteer interested in becoming a wish-granting volunteer will be required to attend a separate 6-hour Wish Granter Training session prior to becoming involved in wish activities.
