Anett, 4, is like many girls her age who have an affinity for princesses and fairy tales. Unlike most girls her age though, Anett is dealing with a life-threatening autoimmune disorder that requires countless medical treatments and doctor visits. During one of these visits to the MediExcel hospital—located in Mexico providing healthcare for San Diego residents—Anett was referred to Make-A-Wish® San Diego to receive a wish.
“We worked with our medical team in Mexico to refer Anett, who otherwise would not have access to the wonderful work of Make-A-Wish San Diego,” said Tina Jenkins, MediExcel Executive Director and Make-A-Wish San Diego Board Member, “I am delighted we could bring the vision of these two organizations together, in a cross-border collaboration, to make this wish possible for Anett.”
The MediExcel team not only made it possible for Anett to receive her wish by making her referral, they also chose to support the organization in honor of Anett’s wish for the ultimate Princess Shopping Spree. As a fun part of her wish experience, the MediExcel team surprised her at the Make-A-Wish office and revealed that her wish would be coming true…a wish for a shopping spree where she would dress up as her favorite princess and be accompanied by her very own princess escort. Anett glowed as she learned her wish would be coming true.
On her wish day, Anett entered the Disney store with her new princess best friend and told everyone that “All of the stuffed animals are telling me to take them home.” She was overjoyed when she was gifted with a special limited-edition Cinderella princess bear by the Build-A-Bear store, since that is her favorite princess of all time. When she arrived to her last destination, Toys-R-Us, she was greeted by their mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe, who helped her shop and when it was time to leave she gave him a big kiss on the cheek. Anett couldn’t help but smile from ear-to-ear thinking about all her wishes that had come true.
“Wishes like Anett’s are more than just nice to have,” said Chris Sichel, Make-A-Wish San Diego President & CEO, “they represent an impactful part of treatment for wish kids and their entire family during a very difficult time in their lives.”
The memories from Anett’s wish experience will continue to offer her and her entire family hope and happiness during this very difficult time in their lives.
