Types of Volunteers

Office

Assist with miscellaneous projects at the office, including phone calls, wish research, mailings, etc. Volunteers can determine the frequency with which they serve, but they must have daytime availability during our office hours:

Monday through Thursday 8:30am-5:00pm, and Friday 8:30-3:30pm.

Airport Greeter

Meet visiting families at the airport. San Diego has become a destination for many wish families traveling throughout the country, as we host over 200 wishes a year! Welcome families to San Diego and assist them in reaching their final destination. Opportunities usually take 2-3 hours and volunteers are needed on weekdays, weeknights, or weekends.

Special Events

Serve at events that raise funds to grant wishes. Event duties may include, but are not limited to: working registration and check-out tables, facilitating auctions, selling raffle tickets, asking for donations, preparing goody bags, set-up and break-down of event materials, etc.

Fundraising

Help us secure donated goods and services, write grants and/or sponsorship proposals, build partnerships with local companies, conduct research on giving campaigns conducted by local companies, organize a frequent-flier donation campaign, or plan/organize an external event to benefit Make-A-Wish. Volunteers should have the ability and motivation to ask individuals and businesses for financial support.

Translator

Help fascilitate wish experiences for non-English-speaking families. Translators have the option of becoming fully trained wish granting volunteers. They can also provide short-term support as needed.  *Our greatest need is for Spanish-speaking volunteers as our territory covers all of San Diego and Imperial Valley, however we are always in need of translators to assist in interpreting variety of languages and overcome speaking barriers.

Make-A-Wish Muscle

Help with set-up and break-down of special events, backyard makeovers, furniture assembly and other heavy-lifting.

Wish Granter

Wish granters meet the family, help the wish child determine the wish and act as a liaison between Make-A-Wish staff members and the family during the planning process.  Wish granters must attend a mandatory in-depth training session.
